First 2022 OMAFRA crop report advises checking winter survival

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs’ (OMAFRA’s) field crop team has released their first crop report of the 2022 season.

The wet fall has left winter wheat fields across the province variable and spotty, but the field crop team recommends doing a stand assessment before making any major decisions. Regarding whether overwintering alfalfa stands will be productive, OMAFRA notes that, since harvest costs per acre do not significantly change with yield, maintaining high-yielding stands keeps the cost per tonne of forage low. Some Ontario canola fields were hit hard by by fall armyworm and slugs (in no-till fields) and there are reports of poor winter survival due to frequent rains after seeding. |READ MORE
